O Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies who encounter motorists Wednesday will be paying particular attention to a driver’s insurance status and documentation.
With help from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, BSO is coordinating a one-day initiative to help make sure motorists have proper insurance, as required by state law, and can display their proof of motor vehicle insurance.
From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., representatives from more than two dozen automobile insurance companies will be gathered at BSO’s Tamarac District Office to help verify insurance policies provided to deputies throughout Broward who are on patrol, conduct traffic stops or respond to accidents.
According to Florida law, anyone who presents a fraudulent proof of motor vehicle insurance can be charged with a third-degree felony.
“Having insurance and being ready to prove it is part of being a safe and responsible driver,” Sheriff Al Lamberti said in a statement outlining Wednesday’s initiative.
