Florida unemployment up, but so are jobs

Unemployment rates in South Florida and the state are up again, but so are the numbers of jobs being added in Florida.

The state’s unemployment rate rose from 11.4 percent to 11.5 percent from June to July, after three months of declines, the state work force agency said Friday.

Despite the slight uptick, the state marked its first year-over-year increase in the number of jobs since June 2007. Total employment in July was 7.24 million, up by 5,700 jobs over June. On an annual basis, it is an increase of 2,700 jobs.

In Broward, the unemployment rate rose to 10.4 percent in July from 10.1 percent in June. Palm Beach County saw its rate rise to 12.2 percent in July from 11.8 percent in June. Miami-Dade County’s unemployment increased to 13.2 percent from 12.8 percent.
